Give Away: The Sleepy Wrap

As I have readied myself for Number Two to join our family, I have spent a great deal of time searching for a new infant carrier. I did a lot of research before Jack was born and decided on the Ergo Carrier. I love my Ergo- for an older baby. It did not take me long to realize that even with the "infant insert" the Ergo is not a good choice for a young infant. It is awkward to carry a infant in the cradle position and you cannot bend forward without the baby's head flopping out backwards. I knew that I would be carrying Number Two more often and with a toddler, bending over even more often. So, the Ergo would just not do. As I see it, here are the options:

The Bjorn- I just can't see how hanging by the crotch can be comfortable and I have read its not good for baby's back. Plus I have worn the Bjorn and my shoulders are killing me after just 15 minutes.

Soft Structure (like Ergo and Beco)- Great for older babies and toddlers. The comfiest of all carriers since you can carry heavy kids on your back.

The Mei Tei- Same problem as the Ergo- not enough support for baby.

The Sling- ugh aching back! Baby looks comfy but Mom's shoulders have got to be aching after a while.

The Sleepy Wrap- I noticed a mom at the playground hefting her toddler in and out of swings with a young infant snuggly wrapped next to her chest. I asked her what type of carrier she was wearing. The Hug a Bub. When I googled it at home I found something even better- The Sleepy Wrap.

The Sleepy Wrap consists of one long and wide piece of stretchy fabric that you wrap around your waist, over your shoulders and cross in front of you underneath the original wrap creating a pocket for the baby. Like This. The baby can then be put into a few different positions.

The wrap is made of French Terry, which is 95% cotton and 5% spandex. Usually for something to be soft and stretchy, it is a weak fabric. I am amazed at how strong and supportive the Sleep Wrap is while retaining a comfortable stretch and softness. Unlike the Moby, which is made of a t-shirt like material, the fabric won't stretch and sag after repeated use.

Here are some of my favorite features:

No Pressure Points. Weight is evenly distributed to both sides of your shoulders, all across your back and your hips. Unlike a sling, I feel like the weight is distributed evenly even with baby in a cradle hold.

Infinitely adjustable. You can move folds of fabric to support babies head or even cover baby. You can tie the wrap tighter to hold your baby higher on your chest, or wrap it more loosely so they sit lower. It fits moms and dads of all shapes and sizes.

Compact. The Sleepy Wrap folds neatly and compactly into its own carry bag. You can throw it in your diaper bag.

Its Stylin! Even though it is much stronger than a t-shirt material, it looks like t-shirt material- in a good way. What I mean is, when you wear the Sleepy Wrap it is slim and trim. I am a smallish gal and feel like I am buried in the straps and padding of the Ergo. See it on other women here. Plus it comes in tons of pretty solid colors.

One slight drawback:

Not so much a drawback- but, it takes some practice to figure out how to put on the Sleepy Wrap. By practice I mean like twice. My only difficulty was keeping the tails from touching the ground when I first got started, which made me wonder if I could do it in public. But yet, the length is what makes it a great, comfortable wrap as well as usable for moms and dads of all sizes. For example, I have used the carrier with my 21 mo old and I am 8 months pregnant. The wrap still fits now with my big belly and will still fit when I have my teensy waist back- haha just kidding about the teensy part.

While it does take some practice, it takes less practice than the Moby or Hug a Bub. Because of the stretchiness, you wrap it pretty tightly against your chest and it will stretch and conform to you and your baby. This makes putting it on somewhat more goof proof since with the Moby and Hug a Bub, you have to figure out just how much room you need for baby to fit between you and the wrap.

While the back carry is not shown on the website you can do it! It will take some more practice to figure that one out- but by the time your baby is ready for the back carry you will be an expert.

There are plenty more good reasons to choose the Sleepy Wrap here.

I have one of these (different brand) and LOVE it!! Used it on the airplane with my then 2-month-old, which left me hands free to entertain my 3-year-old and 2-year-old. Can't say enough good things about this type of baby carrier. Fantastic! (Mine has a cute fabric panel sewn in front to help you find the middle and put it on more easily--I imagine you could this yourself.)

Hi, I just found your blog through Jamie's sophistimom blog --- this wrap looks really comfy! I tried several wraps and the only one that I still use for my 7 month old is a homemade moby wrap style. I like how this wrap comes in a little carrier because it's a huge hassle to tote around a 15 foot long piece of fabric!

I would love one of these for #2!

I SO need this. I have a 2 month and a 20 month old. Definitely need "hands free" to help my boy cross the street and stay out of trouble!

How interesting! I have been looking into a sling for impending baby #2, and I would be very interested to try this one out. It sounds like it solves my concerns with the other slings I've been looking at.

I have a baby hawk and it was tough for a little one. I'd love a sleepy wrap.

I desperately want one of these! I tried making my own wrap, but the fabric is not stretchy and it's hard to use. The Sleepy wrap seems so much better! Please please please pick my entry!

Thanks for the overview of several options. I bought a used Snugli, but this looks much more comfortable for both me and our baby coming in May.

I don't want to buy any new baby things for my newborn because she is my 4th (and last) but I'd love to try a wrap so I have another option besides the sling.

I have a carrier but my baby hates it - this seems like a much more natural product. Thanks for the chance! alicedemske at hotmail.com

I am having baby #2 and would LOVE LOVE this, I had the exact same opinion about the Ergo - love it for an older baby/toddler, but not practical for an infant. I've been doing a lot of research and I think this sounds perfect!! I'm crossing my fingers.

I used the baby bjorn for my two kids (now 4&5 yrs) I wish this product had been available then, or if it was, I had known about it. Now I'm commenting so if i win I can give this to a friend who is expecting twins soon.

I have a Moby, but this one seems a little better. After about 1/2 hour, the Moby would stretch some. When in the grocery store or mall or wherever I was when this would happen,I would have to unwrap the whole python-of a piece of frabic to re-wind it. (It really is as long as a python!) Sleepy wraps look like their fabric stretches less, which is great!!! P.S. Please give it to the Solomon family! We know them well and they would be so very greatful!! (And it would get plenty of use with their soon-to-arrive twin boys!)

I am constantly amazed at how many new and innovative baby carriers there are now, compared to 7 years ago when my oldest was born. Back then, I felt like the only choices were the Snugli and the Bjorn. With my 3rd, I tried the sling, kangaroo pouch, and Moby wrap, but am still holding out for the perfect carrier for any future kids. I'd love to try this one (or see how Tish likes it)!

Bethany said...

I've seen people wearing these and they seem complicated, but I guess like anything, practice makes perfect. Baby #2 won't be coming for a while now, but I know of somebody who could borrow it for a while with her twins on the way.

I am definitely in need of a good carrier - I used a sling at first, but it just didn't feel secure enough, and my shoulder ached after too much use. I would love to try one of these!

I have kangaroo sling and i love it but already my 2+ month old may be getting too scrunched in it - this wrap is the way to go for those who want to go from newborn through toddler with one carrier. I found wraps a little wieldy because i'm a smaller person, but have tons of friends who swear by them! Would love to try this one, as would my lovely and very pregnant friend Tish!
