I think everyone is on the hunt for some low-budget Christmas gift ideas this year. I know we are. I loved Holly's post on Monday on making your own Gourmet Hot Cocoa mix. All you would need is a trip to IKEA to pick up some inexpensive glass containers to store it in.
Or you could go the Nie Nie route. One year she had saved up her baby formula containers and covered them with cute paper to make festive cookie "tins." So smart.
I am also loving this idea from Martha Stewart : whip up a batch of your favorite holiday cookie, and then include a small recipe booklet sampling of your family's traditional holiday goodies on top.
I think this idea by Marie and Make and Takes is genius: the Homemade Dough Log Roll. Let your friends decide when they are going to enjoy their holiday cookies- they can bake them up then.
If you want to get the kids involved in the gift making, the possibilities are endless. Family Fun is always a great resource for the holidays. They have a little tutorial video on making your own GingerBread House Kit. That would be a fantastic gift for a cousin or your child's friend.
Two years ago my kids made these felt pens for their teachers and grandparents. Not the most sophisticated homemade gift, but my girls absolutely loved putting them together. It was a totally managable craft for a younger child (minus the hot glue gun step, of course).
Inspired by this post on How About Orange, I purchased a bunch of these super tiny 2"x 2" mini-canvases a while back, in hopes of my children making some cute holiday magnets for grandparents. Still trying to decide what they should paint. Self portraits? Something Holiday-ish? Still trying to decide....and the day is fast approaching.

Thank you for all the darling budget-friendly ideas! And may I add just one more...I have saved empty toilet paper and paper towel rolls to transform into candy filled presents. Cover your empty roll in Christmas wrapping paper or fabric with enough extra on each end to tie closed. Fill the tube with Christmasy-wrapped candies and tie each end with a ribbon. Makes a great gift for the kids' friends. Merry Christmas!
Fabric covered button magnets. Yes, it's that easy. Make some fabric covered buttons and glue a magnet on the back!
Gift-giving for my parents and in-laws is so much easier now that we have kids! Any homemade crafty gift that the kids help make is always a bigger hit than other gifts I've stressed over for months. My oldest daughter is still pretty young for "useful" crafts (she's just turning 2) but we had a lot of fun this year with a classic: salt dough ornaments! I avoided paint by using Christmas tree cookie cutters and green dough for the ornaments, then coloring smaller batches of the dough in various colors so she could roll out little balls and stick the "lights and ornaments" on the tree before baking. We also cut out some wreath shapes and glued pictures of the girls on the back so they acted as a frame. We have discovered that all crafty gifts are appreciated even more when we include a few pictures of the craft-making action!
